Assessment

Three Kinds of Assessment

  1. We assess FOR LEARNING to determine your child’s prior knowledge before we begin a new unit. This helps us to effectively plan lessons designed to meet student needs at their current level of understanding.
  2. We assess AS LEARNING to determine your child’s learning for specific concepts and skills throughout the unit. This helps us to determine the effectiveness of the current instructional strategies and whether modifications are needed. This also helps to determine next steps for students
  3. We asses OF LEARNING at the end of a unit to determine the extent of your child’s summative understanding and ability to integrate all concepts and skills learned. This helps us to report to you and your child about the level of progress.

Forms of Assessment

  • Observations: during independent or group work
  • Performance tasks: independently, in pairs or in groups
  • Pencil and Paper tasks: a variety of problem solving tasks to show understanding
  • Discussions: small or large group questioning
  • Guided math/interviews: this helps with one-on-one understanding
  • Show what you know: quick exit tickets of understanding on sticky notes

What is being assessed

Understanding: Students have acquired content and can demonstrate a comprehension of its meaning and significance in all subjects. For example, adding 2 numbers together or understanding meaning in a text.

Application: The use of knowledge and skills to make connections within and between various contexts. An example of this would be selecting and using appropriate tools or strategies to solve a problem.

Communication: The ability to convey information through a variety of forms including oral, visual and written.

Communication Student Expectations

It gives suggestions on how you can get your work to a higher level and BUMP IT UP. Lesson Success Criteria will be co-created with students ahead of time.
